Detoxification
Baths, Sauna, Massage, Skin Brushing, Exfoliation, Water
There are many ways to help your body
in it's very important job of detoxification. Read about the liver,
colon etc. in the links in the left panel under "Detoxifying your Body".
In this page, we will talk about Baths, Sauna's, Massage, Skin Brushing,
Exfoliation and how drinking water will help your body to detoxify.
Baths
Hot baths are an effective way to detoxify the body.
They also have the added benefit of relaxing muscles and relieving muscle
pain. Skin is a major detoxification pathway. Hot water increases
perspiration and opens pores which will help to release toxins.
It is always best to start out slowly by taking several plain hot water
baths because detoxification baths can make one feel very ill depending on
how toxic you are. Start by soaking in plain hot water for 10-20 minutes
several times for the first week. Make the hot water as hot as you can
while still feeling comfortable.
After several plain hot water baths, carefully try alternating separately,
each of the following ingredients. Empsom salts (*Sal-FreeTM)
(1/4 cup to 2 cups), hydrogen peroxide (up to 8 oz of food grade hydrogen
peroxide to 1/2 bath of warm water) (*Sal-FreeTM) , baking soda (8 oz to 1 pound)
(*Sal-FreeTM) .
Take a large glass of water with you and drink it during your bath.
This will help you purge toxins and will keep you from becoming dehydrated.
Be careful to get up slowly out of the tub because a hot bath can make one
feel dizzy.
Sauna
Sauna's are often used in detoxification programs and work
similar to baths in that they allow detoxification through the skin. For
more information about sauna therapy see:
Home Sauna's
Exfoliation
Exfoliation of the skin is another helpful tool because it
opens the pores and encourages the body to expel toxins. By removing
dead skin you will clear clogged pores and debri and encourage new cell
growth. Exfoliation also stimulates the lymph system to move debri.
An added benefit is that your skin will look healthier and younger!
Dry Skin brushing
Dry skin brushing helps to remove the top layer of old, dead
skin and opens the pores, encouraging detoxification. Skin brushing also
moves your lymph system which is another important detoxification
pathway.
Brushing the skin is particularly important for those who are sedentary.
Exercise is the primary way that the lymph system works to detoxify the
body. Skin brushing stimulates the lymph to work in a similar fashion.
Skin brushing can't replace exercise but it will stimulate the lymph system
which will allow more purging of toxins from the body. Brush all parts of
the body toward the heart. Be sure to drink a lot of pure water after you
brush in order to remove toxins that have been stirred up.
Massage
Massage moves the lymph system and is very good at increasing the
circulation in general. Check
here for
more information about massage. If you are unable to see a massage
therapist you may want to consider trying an
electronic massage
chair or other
massage tools.
Drink an abundance of Pure Water
Don't underestimate the importance of water in detoxifying
the body or lack of it as a cause of illness and pain. Water flushes
the body of toxins. Without sufficient water, our body cannot function
properly or rid itself of toxins.
Dehydration can be the source of pain and disease. As we age, our
built-in thirst sensation slowly fails which can lead to dehydration without
us even being aware that we are dehydrated.
According to a fascinating book written by Dr. F. Batmanghelidj
Your Body's Many Cries for Water, when the body is
dehydrated, it instigates a rationing and distribution
system, a form of drought management. This water rationing causes more
histamine (and other things) to be generated that cause increased pain,
allergies, asthma and other problems. In animals it has been shown
that histamine generation gets pronounced whenever the animal is dehydrated.
Histamine rations available water in dehydrated animals - drought
management. Histamines and its subordinate water intake and distribution
regulators, prostaglandins, kinins, and PAF (another histamine associated
agent) also cause pain when they come across pain-sensing nerves in the
body.
According to Dr. Batmanghelidj, chronic pains of the body that cannot be
easily explained as injury or infection should first and foremost be
interpreted as chronic water shortage in the area where the pain is being
registered - a local thirst.
Dehydration has an effect on metabolism
Water has a firmly established and essential hydrolytic role in all aspects
of body metabolism-water dependent chemical reactions (hydrolysis). Similar
to the chemical powers of water that make a seed grow and produce a new
plant or tree.
The energy generated by water is used in the manufacture of ATP and GTP
ATP is adenosine triphosphate, a high energy phosphate molecule used to
store and release energy for work within the body. GTP is
guanosine triposphate, a high-energy molecule, required for a number of
biochemical reactions, including nucleic acid and protein synthesis.
Dehydration affects the brains ability to function. Products
manufactured in the brain cells are transported on "waterways" to their
destination in the nerve endings for use in the transmission of messages. In
other words, we need it for brain function.
Proteins and enzymes need water to function properly.
Proteins and enzymes of the body function more efficiently in solutions of
lower viscosity, this is true in all the receptors of the cell membranes.
In other words, water allows proteins and enzymes to function better.
Dehydration affects the pancreas and can cause type II diabetes.
Dr. Batmanghelidj has written a whole chapter on this and it is hard to boil
down because it is very complicated but essentially, insulin inhibition is
an adaptation process of the pancreas to the body being dehydrated.
Drinking enough water will help your body to normalize insulin production.
As you can see, adequate water intake can make a huge
difference in the body's ability to detoxify but also in ones level of
health in general. Be sure to provide your body with pure water so as
not to add to your body's job of detoxification.
