Stop U.S. and Canadian Horse Slaughter and
Inhumane Treatment!
Update!
Federal Court Orders USDA to Halt Inspection of Horses for Slaughter | The
Humane Society of the United States
Many U.S. and Canadian citizens
have no idea that our beautiful and noble horses are allowed to be treated
in horribly inhumane ways while on their way to be slaughtered and
sold overseas for human consumption.
It is illegal in the U.S. to eat horse meat yet many thousands of horses
are sent to Texas, Illinois and Canada to be slaughtered each year so their meat can
be sold overseas as a delicacy. The
majority of these horses are healthy and often their death is not so
humane.
Approximately 70% of the horses that are slaughtered are not old or lame
and do not have
behavioral problems.
About 1/3 of the horses that are killed are race horses
that are no longer considered winners.
Some come from Premarin Farms. Others are wild horses sold
from public lands and yet another source comes from stolen horses or unsuspecting private
owners who take their horse to an auction, assuming they will be
sold to another family.
These beautiful
creatures are hauled to the slaughter house in very crowded quarters
where they can't even stand up all the way because the height of the
transport is intended for pigs and cattle, not horses. Horses often suffer
greatly before reaching the slaughter house and some are gravely injured
or dead upon arrival. They are allowed to be denied
food, water or exercise for up to 28 hours before reaching their final
destination. Those who are profiting from the slaughter of these horses do
not want to pay to provide humane conditions and they are legally allowed
to get away with it.
Federal law stipulates that horses be rendered unconscious before they are
killed. Unfortunately,
the mechanism that is meant to render them unconscious by giving them a
severe blow to the head is not very effective for horses due to their long
neck and often, these loving,
beautiful animals are
alive, in pain and aware as they go through the
slaughtering process. The USDA specifies that 10% live vivisection
is acceptable!
California passed a law that forbids horse slaughter in their State or for
horses to be transported to other States for slaughter. A few other
States have laws to stop this practice but unfortunately the money to
enforce these laws is not available and so the practice continues, even in
States that have passed laws against horse slaughter.
Premarin Farms
A number of horses that are sent to slaughter come from premarin farms.
They are the mares and their foals (babies) who are discarded once they are no
longer useful for the purpose of making hormones for human consumption.
The name Premarin comes from PREgnant MARes urINe. Premarin is a hormone
used in hormone replacement therapy for women.
Those unlucky enough to become premarin farm mares are kept pregnant year
after year until they can no longer get pregnant at which time they are
sold at auction. The majority of them go from auction to slaughter
houses.
During their tenure as pregnant mare urine producers they
are kept in small stalls, isolated from other horses and allowed only minimal exercise.
This allows for maximum urine to be collected via a cup that is attached to their body 24
hours a day. They typically do not have room in these small quarters
to turn around or lie down flat in order to sleep deeply. The urine
collection cup allow for their skin to become infected due to
being in constant contact with urine.
It is estimated that approximately 30,000 foals are produced yearly by
premarin farms. Mares are not allowed to stay with their foals for
the normal amount of time and the majority of foals are sent to be
slaughtered or to be fattened for slaughter at the age of 3 or 4 months old.
What can you do to stop Premarin Farms?
Don't buy premarin! Buy alternative hormones that are made from
plant materials. Premarin will not be produced if people refuse
to buy it.
Ask for alternatives such as:
Estradiol
Estropipate
Estrone
Estratab
Estraderm
Estrace
Ortho-Est
Remifemin

Everyone
U.S. Citizens
If you are a U.S. Citizen, you can help by making sure that the Federal
law that has already been introduced, is passed.
With the click of your mouse and one quick e-mail, let all of your
representatives, including the president, know that you want horse
slaughter to stop. Ask them to support HR 503. At the same time, ask
them to stop slaughter of wild horses by supporting HR 297. Read
below for more information about these bills.
Click here, enter your zip code and follow directions. Cut and paste the
letter below if you like.
Following is a simple example of what you can say in your e-mail to your
representatives. Cut and paste it into the body of the e-mail and
then edit it in anyway you like.
Please protect both domestic and wild horses:
The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (AHSPA, H.R. 503) will stop
the slaughter of horses for human consumption and the domestic and
international transport of live horses for human consumption. The
transportation and slaughter of these horses is inhumane and should be
stopped.
Support H.R. 297 to restore the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act
to its original language which prevented wild horses from being sold for
slaughter. If the scheduled slaughter of 11,000 of the remaining
39,000 wild horses is permitted the herds will no longer be viable and
will gradually be lost to natural attrition. Don't allow this to happen.
Please vote yes on H.R. 297 and H.R. 503 and urge your fellow politicians
to do likewise.
Thank you for your consideration in this very important matter.
Sincerely,
Your Name

Title: To amend the Horse Protection Act to prohibit the
shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing,
purchasing, selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be
slaughtered for human consumption, and for other purposes.
Effective Sept. 20th, 2005 there is a 1 year ban on horse slaughter and
transport of horses from the U.S. for slaughter in Canada and Mexico.
This is only temporary. In order to ensure that horse slaughter does
not resume after this one year reprieve, we must make sure that HR 503
passes. Click on the following link, enter your zip code and you
will be taken to a list of your representatives. You can write one
e-mail, asking for your representatives to support bill HR 503 and send it

On December 8, 2004, a 3,000-page
Appropriations Bill which included a rider (Section 142), known as the
Burns Amendment was surreptitiously slipped into the spending bill by Senator
Conrad Burns of Montana. This rider lifted over thirty-four years of
protection for our wild horse and burro herds, allowing them to be sold
for slaughter. A death warrant for wild horses was signed with the passage
of this bill.

Donate to horse rescue organizations.
There are many types of horse rescue organizations.
Some rescue horses by purchasing those that are slated for the slaughter
house, rehabilitating them if needed, and finding good homes for them.
Some keep those horses that are not adoptable, allowing them to live out
their lives in comfort, others advocate for horses through education etc..
