Clothes and Slimming Fashion Tips for Plus sizes
Many of our fashion tips apply to both men and women and to people of all sizes.  They will help you look slimmer no matter what your size.

Look on this page for general fashion tips and in each clothing category for tips relating to specific articles of clothing.  For example, look for slimming fashion tips for pants on the pants page.  You can find the pants page by looking in the side panel to the left under "Plus Size Clothes For Men and Women".

General Slimming fashion tips
Overall, create outfits that draw the eye in a vertical line.  Vertical lines (up and down) elongate the body and are slimming whereas horizontal lines (side to side) widen and shorten the body making one look  heavier.  Avoid creating horizontal lines that accent problem areas.  For example, if you have problem hips, don't wear a jacket that has pocket flaps near the hips in a contrasting color. This serves to accentuate your hips. In general, look for ways to de-emphasize figure flaws and emphasize assets.

Dressing in one color from top to bottom is one of the best and most used slimming tricks because it creates an unbroken vertical line that elongates the body.  Contrasting colors that divide the body at the waist or hips serve to make one look shorter and heavier because it creates a very noticeable horizontal line and often draws attention to problem areas such as the waist or hips.   You can add a splash of color to your outfit by wearing a lighter color shell or scarf under a darker jacket or shirt.

Combine fabric textures (suede, silk, wool, velvet etc.) to add interest to your single color outfits or dress them up with accessories.    See
Does This Make Me Look Fat? : The Definitive Rules for Dressing Thin for Every Height, Size, and Shape, for tips and tricks on how to work around the monochromatic (single color) theme and still get a slimming effect.

Dark neutral colors such as black or navy blue are generally more slimming than lighter colors.  Avoid horizontal strips (side to side) because they have a widening affect.  Avoid big prints because they tend to make a person look bigger.  If you want to wear a print, look for small or sparse prints with a dark background.

Pay attention to garment details because they matter.  Pockets, pleats, buttons, zippers, darts etc. matter.  Placement of these garment embellishments matter. Make sure that they don't accent a figure flaw.  Again, the key is to draw the eye in a vertical line.  For example, avoid large round buttons, especially if shiny, flashy or cheap looking.  They have a potential to add pounds because of their shape.  They also limit your accessory choices.  You can change buttons on a blouse, jacket etc. easily for very little money and completely change it to a more flattering look.

Accessories are important.  Pay attention to how they affect your overall size and shape.  You will find tips in the accessory section.  For example, one tip that can make a difference is to wear accessories that match your size.  If you are large, don't wear small accessories because they will make you look larger due to the contrast between your size and their size.  Shoes are another important consideration.  They can help draw a vertical line and elongate and slenderize or they can cause you to look shorter and wider.

Underwear is also very important and can make or break your look. Check the pages for each category in the left side panel for tips on all these areas and more and remember, enjoy your shape, no matter what it is.

Posture
The way you stand, sit and walk can make you look taller and thinner or shorter and some ways of standing can even make you look like you have a bigger behind.  Stand, sit and walk with your spine straight.  There is a certain charisma about a person who looks confident.
