Slimming Fashion Tips For
Coats
The goal is to make your body look long
because longer is slimming. Drawing the eye along a vertical line
(up and down) is slimming while horizontal lines (side to side) tend to
widen. As in all other outfits, try to draw the eye
in a vertical line for that slimming illusion.
A floor length coat will make you look shorter. If you are tall,
that is not a problem but if not, avoid floor length coats and instead
consider ankle length if you want a long coat. Be careful not to cut
your body in 1/2 with the length. A long vertical line is slimming
and should be maintained if possible. For example, a dark coat that
stops at the hip, with a light colored pair of slacks will cut your body
at the length of the coat rather than elongating your body.
An oversized coat with no shape will enlarge your profile. A more
flattering coat will fit well (not too small) and will have shape.
A windbreaker type jacket that has drawstrings around the hips and a
blouson shape is not appropriate for anyone who is larger on the top
because it accents the top and makes one look larger than they really are.
The shorter length of the jacket will break a more slimming vertical line and
drawstrings around the hip will draw attention to the hips.
Stiff or bulky fabrics tend to make anyone look bigger. Stiff
fabrics take on a shape of their own and are rarely flattering and bulky
fabrics add mass. Shiny fabric also makes us look bigger because of
it's reflective surface. Light bounces off rather than being absorbed and
has a tendency to enlarge you and the coat. You can see this in
action by looking at a light bulb that is off and then one that is on.
The light bulb that is on will look bigger. The ideal fabric is
flowing with enough weight to hang well.
