Butyrate (also known as butyric acid) is a short chain fatty acid produced
when intestinal fiber is metabolized by healthy bacteria.
Butyrate is the main energy source
for the cells that line the colon. Adequate amounts of butyrate are
necessary in order to maintain colon health.
Butyrate synthesis can be inhibited by sulfites as well as a lack of
adequate dietary fiber or healthy bacteria. Sulfites are a commonly
found preservative used in foods, alcoholic beverages and medications.
Butyrate is recommended by some alternative health care providers to heal the colon in
leaky gut syndrome and is helpful for
ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel syndrome. Sodium Butyrate
enemas are prescribed by an M.D. as a treatment for Ulcerative Colitis.
The two dietary sources of butyrate come from fiber when metabolized
properly (fermented by healthy bacteria) and butter (3% butyrate).
Recent studies have shown that Butyrate may be helpful in slowing the
growth rate of colon cancer.1,2
Leaky Gut Syndrome
Leaky gut syndrome occurs when the intestinal walls become
damaged and thus become more permeable (leaky) than is normal. In
leaky gut syndrome, partially digested foods, toxins and disease causing
bacteria pass through the damaged intestinal lining causing ill health.
Symptoms and illnesses that may result from a leaky gut are food allergies and
sensitivities, malabsorption, multiple chemical sensitivities, autoimmune
disease, inflammatory conditions like colitis, migraines, osteoarthritis/spondyloarthropathy, and many more health problems.
Some even think that illnesses like fibromyalgia may be caused or greatly
aggravated by leaky gut syndrome.
According to Great Smoky Diagnostic Laboratories, possible causes of leaky
gut are low dietary fiber, gluten sensitivities or food allergies, use of
cytotoxic drugs/chemotherapy, use of NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
drugs such as ibuprofen, hypoxia, infection (bacterial, yeast protozoan),
ethanol, elevated ROS (reactive oxygen species), or nutritional
deficiencies such as zinc, vitamin A or folate.
