Detoxifying Your Body
In large part, our ability to handle
toxins determines our level of health. Everyday living exposes us to
many toxins (heavy metals, pesticides, pollution etc.), infections
(bacterial, fungal, viral), and even the by products of our own metabolic
functions produce toxins.
Heavy metals and other toxins are produced by industry and released into the
air, ground water and other places where they can be absorbed into our
bodies. Pollution from insecticides, cleaning solutions, automobiles,
toxic chemical spills and our use of medications are just a few examples of
the pollution that our body must process.
Toxins that are produced by bacteria and yeast in the gut can be absorbed
and have been linked with a variety of illnesses such as psoriasis, Crohns
disease, liver disease, lupus, asthma, allergies, immune diseases and
others.
Toxins are damaging to the body which is why our body works so hard to get
rid of them. If our detoxification system becomes overburdened we will
start to accumulate toxins. This accumulation will make us
progressively sensitive to other chemicals, even those that are not normally
toxic. Once our body becomes toxic, we will be more susceptible to
many illnesses, including cancers.
Our body eliminates toxins by neutralizing them or getting rid of them
through the urine, feces, lungs and skin. Toxins that our body cannot
deal with are stored in our tissues, typically the fat.
The liver, colon and kidney are the three main organs that the body uses for
detoxification. Detoxification through the lymph system and the skin
are also important.
In general, any illness puts more stress on our body so it would be
reasonable to learn about our detoxification system and incorporate ways to
enhance it through diet, avoidance of toxins and the use of supplements. In
addition, if any of the following factors apply to you, your liver is
probably not up to par:

Diabetes

Gallstones
-
History of heavy alcohol use

Psoriasis

Natural and synthetic steroid hormone use: anabolic
steroids, estrogens and oral contraceptives

High exposure to certain chemicals or drugs, cleaning
solvents, pesticides, antibiotics, diuretics, nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs, thyroid hormone

History of viral hepatitis
