Detoxifying Your Body
Helpful Supplements
Following is a list of supplements that are known to
help the body do it's job of detoxifying. We are constantly
bombarded with toxins, both external and internal. For those who are
ill, it is imperative that we do whatever we can to support our body's
ability to detoxify. It is important for everyone to limit their
exposure to toxins but for those who are ill, extra support may needed
in the form of dietary changes and supplements. If you are already in
a detoxification program or are taking antibiotics for an infection, you may
need extra support because as bugs are killed, they produce toxins that your
body must get rid of.
For more information about detoxification in general, please see the links
in the "Detoxifying Your Body" box in the side panel.
We have noted those nutrients that are Sal-FreeTM by putting
*Sal-FreeTM
under the name of each item. If you are someone who must avoid
salicylates, check this page and check our
Sal-FreeTM
(Salicylate Free) Supplements Database
to find suitable products that you can buy on-line. If you don't need
to avoid salicylates, check this page and also check our
Supplement Database
Acidophilus
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Acidophilus is a type of probiotic that may help to detoxify
harmful substances by restoring "friendly" bacteria in your body.
Friendly bacteria bind with some unwanted substances, causing them to be
excreted.
For more information about probiotics:
Probiotics
Do not take acidophilus within several hours of taking
antibiotics or products with antibacterial action because the antibacterial
action
will kill the good bacteria in the acidophilus.
Other benefits:
Antibacterial
Helps with candida infections
Alpha Lipoic Acid
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Helps revitalize glutathione. Also mobilizes metals.
Other Benefits:
Lowers Blood Sugar
Cautions:
May lower your blood sugar
Anti-Tox Metals - Homeopathic
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Detoxifies the body and provides temporary relief of symptoms
associated with the build-up of toxic metal residues, such as abdominal
discomfort, diarrhea, headache, irritability, muscle pain or general
feelings of weakness.
Beta Sitosterol
(*Sal-FreeTM)
It is thought that beta sitosterol effectively blocks cholesterol
absorption, thus reducing cholesterol in the blood. It may be a
replacement for CSM (Cholestryamine) in binding neurotoxins according to
several medical professional's.

Betaine
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Betaine helps to decongest the liver because it is a lipotropic agent and
lipotropic agents promote the flow of bile to and from the liver.
Some studies suggest that those with gallstones are likely to have
insufficient stomach acid. Check with your doctor for a test to see if
you have sufficient stomach acid.
Bentonite or Clay
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Due to it's negatively charged particles, bentonite attracts
positive particles (toxins) such as, heavy metals, pesticides, bacteria,
viruses, free radicals and other toxins. It then absorbs them and
expels them through the colon. It is known for it's amazing absorptive
properties and can absorb many times it weight in toxins.
Bentonite is especially helpful for colon cleansing but it is also helpful
in conjunction with other types of cleansing. You may wish to use it with
other cleansers that release toxins from the body because as you cleanse and
release toxins, bentonite can attract, absorb and release them from the body
rather than allow the body to reabsorb them through the colon.
Take it internally as a drink mixed with water or juice or use it in a
bentonite and
psyllium shake. Use externally in a bath or as a
poultice.
Drink clay on an empty stomach. Wait to eat for an hour after
taking it. Take it well away from medications and supplements.
In addition, drink generous amounts of water so that your body can expel the
toxins as they are being drawn out of your tissues.

Calcium D-Glucarate
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Charcoal
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Activated charcoal binds intestinal toxins and unfriendly
microbial growth and excretes them in the stools.
Charcoal, activated
Chlorella
Binds and removes endo-toxins. Also removes metals.
Chlorophyll
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Warning: For those who are strictly
following Dr. St. Amand's rulings, please check with him for his ruling.
This is a single chemical extraction that is not a salicylate. It
should be fine if it is pure in the
same way that vitamins are chemical extractions and are fine if not
contaminated.
Chlorophyll helps plants get energy from the sun (light)
because it plays an integral part in photosynthesis. Chlorophyll is the green pigment that is found in green plants, brown and red
algae, and certain aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. As a supplement, it cleanses the blood by cleansing and
refurbishing red blood cells.
Other benefits/uses:
Anemia
Menorrhagia (excessive menstrual bleeding)
Osteoporosis
Hermorrhagic Disease of the newborn
Bowel deodorizer
Burns and wounds
Cancer preventative
Choline
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Choline is a lipotropic agent. Lipotropic agents are
compounds that promote the flow of fat and bile to and from the liver. They
decongest the liver and promote improved liver function which helps the
liver to perform it's job of detoxifying the body.
CoQ10
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Also known as ubiquinone because it is ubiquitous in the body
(meaning everywhere). Foods contain only trace amounts and the body
manufactures it in sometimes adequate but not optimal amounts. It is often
deficient, especially in those over age 50.
The liver and the heart muscle have the highest level of CoQ10 of any
organs/tissue in the body. Detoxifying the body can put a strain on
the liver. CoQ10 can be helpful in supporting the liver so that it can do an
optimal job of detoxifying the body.
Other benefits/uses:
Heart disease
Cancer
Diabetes
Obesity
Periodontal disease
High blood pressure
Immune system support
Allergies
Essential for energy production in the cells.
Protects the body from free radicals.
Body Pure Foot Pads
The Japanese have been using this product to combat fatigue, improve
circulation, increase metabolism, enhance quality of sleep, help release
toxins and as a general practice to stay healthy and clean.
Foot pads have become very popular for detoxification.
Some people wear them at night and swear that they notice a huge difference
in how they feel. You can actually see the toxins in the pad when you
wake up in the morning.
Digestive Enzymes
(*Sal-FreeTM)
When taken on an empty stomach, digestive enzymes can clean
up cellular debris, chemicals, toxins, free radicals, undigested protein and
antigen-antibody complexes resulting from allergic reactions.
Glutathione
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Glutathione is produced in the liver from the amino acids cysteine, glutamic
acid and glycine. It helps support the body's antioxidant system and
promotes healthy liver function. It is a major blood cleanser and is a
good detoxifier of heavy metals and drugs.
pre-cursers to glutathione
L-Cysteine
methionine
A deficiency can be caused by diseases that increase the need for
glutathione, deficiencies of the nutrients needed for glutathione synthesis
or diseases that inhibit the formation of glutathione.
Following is a partial list of illnesses that may cause depletion of
glutathione:
Fibromyalgia
HIV
HepaticCirrhosis
Cataract formation
Advanced Aids
Adult Respiratory distress syndrome
Lyme Disease
Glycine
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Glycine is an amino acid. In the liver, glycine helps to convert
harmful substances into harmless forms. Glycine also helps with
glutathione which is another important detoxifier.
L-Arginine
(*Sal-FreeTM)
The amino acid l-arginine has several roles in the body, such as helping
remove ammonia from the body which is a waste product of protein metabolism.
It also aids in liver detoxificaiton. Arginine is an essential
precursor of Nitric Oxide which helps maintain blood vessel tone.
Other benefits:
Immune system enhancer
Cirrhosis of the liver
Fatty liver
Increase muscle mass
Reduction of body fat
Increases sperm count
Assists in the release of Growth Hormone
Maintains blood vessel tone
Warnings:
Avoid if pregnant or lactating.
Avoid if you have a viral infection such as herpes as it appears to promote
the growth of certain viruses.
Persons with schizophrenia should avoid amounts over 30 mg daily
Long-term use, especially of high doses is not recommended.
L-Cystiene
(*Sal-FreeTM)
L-Cystiene is a pre-cursor to L-Glutathione, another amino acid with
powerful antioxidant abilities. Cystiene helps to detoxify harmful
toxins and is one of the best free radical destroyers. L-Cystiene has
a chelating effect, removing excess copper from the body. It protects
cells from the harmful effects of radiation and protects the liver and brain
from the harmful effects of cigarette smoke and alcohol. L-Cystiene is
used in cases of acetaminophen overdoses.
Other benefits:
Effective for the treatment of bronchitis, emphysema and tuberculosis
because it breaks down mucus.. Possibly helpful in the treatment of
osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
PDR-Health on L-Cysteine
L-Ornithine
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Detoxifies ammonia and therefore is detoxifying to the liver. Use at
night instead of another amino acid ammonia detoxifier called Arginine as
Arginine may keep you awake and L-Ornithine will not.
Malic Acid
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Malic acid is one of the most potent chelators of aluminum.
Treatment with malic acid has been shown to greatly increase the fecal and
urinary excretion of aluminum and reduce the concentration of aluminum found
in various organs and tissues. Malic acid protects against the toxic effects
of aluminum and phosphorous. Because of its affinity for phosphate groups,
aluminum blocks the utilization of phosphate for ATP (energy) synthesis.
Adequate malic acid can prevent this toxic effect from occurring.
Methionine
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Methionine is an essential amino acid that supports tissue health, and
functions as an antioxidant to help neutralize toxins. It is a
lipotropic agent.
Molybdenum
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Sulfoxidation is the process by which the sulfur-containing molecules in
drugs (such as chlorpromazine) and foods (such as garlic and sulfite food
additives) are metabolized. Sulfites are used widely in potato salad,
salad bars, dried fruits and in some drugs (such as those used to treat
asthma). When the sulfoxidation pathway isn't working well, people
become sensitive to sulfur-containing drugs and foods. Molybdenum is
essential for this system to work properly.
MSM
(*Sal-FreeTM)
MSM is a free radical scavenger. It detoxifies the body and increases
blood circulation. MSM is claimed to coat the intestinal tract so
parasites lose their ability to hang on and can be flushed away. It is also
thought to decrease detoxificaiton symptoms.
NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine)
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Creates glutathione for both phase I and phase II liver detox
reactions. Glutathione is a major blood
cleanser and protects the liver.
Side effects:
These side effects are rare when doses are in the 1,000 to
1,800 mg per day range. Occasional fever, chills, drowsiness, nausea,
vomiting, breathing spasm, low blood pressure, itching, rash, swelling and
dizziness.
Natural Cellular Defense
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Zeolites are natural volcanic minerals with an unique, complex crystalline
structure. It's honeycomb framework of cavities and channels (like cages)
works at the cellular level trapping, heavy metals and toxins. It is
one of the few negatively charged minerals in nature. It acts as a
magnet, drawing toxins to it, capturing them in its cage and removing them
from the body.
Other benefits
Helps balance pH levels in the body
Supports a healthy immune system
Oxygen Supplements (Stablilized)
(*Sal-FreeTM)
There are various oxygen supplements on the market that claim to help the
body detoxify. Besides increased detoxification, some of the benefits
listed are the killing of bacteria and viruses, improvement of the immune
system and increased energy. We have been unable to find information
to substantiate these claims but there are many people who swear that these
supplements work and since there seem to be quite a few of these supplements
available we have to assume that they are still on the market because people
are finding them helpful.
Psyllium Husk

Free Bowel and Colon Cleansing
Same-e
Important for detoxification of the liver. Glutathione is synthesized
from Same-e.
Silybin
(*Sal-FreeTM)
**For those following the strict salicylate
rulings of Dr. St. Amand: ask them for their ruling on this
ingredient.
Silybin is a purified, single chemical that is extracted from
milk thistle seed much in the way that vitamins
are extracted from plants. It is a purified, single chemical extraction that
is Sal-FreeTM.
Milk thistle is known to be beneficial for the liver. It
has been shown to protect the liver from toxins and pollutants and to
stimulate new liver cell growth. It works partly by protecting glutathione, one of the major detoxifiers of the body.
Flavonolignans are thought to be the active components in milk thistle and
are
likely responsible for the beneficial protective effects of milk thistle on the liver. Silybin is one of the flavonoligans
in milk thistle.
In a study of non-alcoholic liver disease patients, a new pharmaceutical
complex made of silybin, vitamin e and phospholipids looks promising for the
management of non-alcoholic liver disease.2
Sal-FreeTM note:
Silybin is a single chemical extract that is Sal-FreeTM. It is extracted from milk thistle seed much in the way that vitamins
are extracted from plants. The resulting molecule does not contain salicylates and thus the ingredient, if pure, is salicylate free.
Don't confuse Silybin with Silymarin. Silymarin is likely sal-fullTM
because it is typically not a purified, chemical extraction.
Dr. St. Amand may or may not believe that Silybin is salicylate free.
Silybin is a flavonolignans.
Flavonolignans are flavonoids bound to lignans. Dr. St. Amand has
stated that all bioflavonoids (flavonoids) are blockers
however he approves of soy which is full of flavonoids (Isoflavones).
For further discussion on bioflavonoids see:
Sal-FreeTM Ingredients - Bioflavonoids
We
take a scientific approach and look at the molecule itself for the salicylate structure and contact the manufacturer for purity issues.
We feel certain that if pure, Silybin is safe to use but you should decide for yourself.
For more information on how to determine if something is a salicylate based
on it's molecular structure, please see:
Information and Diagrams re Salicylates
Warnings
Silybin is an active ingredient of milk thistle. In theory, milk
thistle may lower blood sugar levels so it's possible that silybin may have
a similar effect. Similarly, milk thistle may affect other medications
making them either stronger or less effective:
MedlinePlus Herbs and Supplements: Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum),
Silymarin
Scroll down for milk thistle and other medications to see interactions
Taurine
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Taurine is an amino acid. It supports the liver in it's ability to decrease toxicity and increased water
solubility of toxins.
Whey
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Removes toxic metals. Inhibits harmful bacteria and viruses in the
gastrointestinal tract. Enhances the body's production of glutathione.
Vitamin A (Retinol)
(*Sal-FreeTM)
An antioxidant. Antioxidant vitamins are helpful in protecting the
liver from damage as well as helping in detoxification mechanisms.
Other benefits:
Acne and other skin disorders
Vision - night blindness
May help heal gastrointestinal ulcers
Wound healing
Immune system support
Wrinkle reducer when applied topically
Blood sugar
Warnings
Taking large amounts of Vitamin A, (over 100,000 IU per day) over a long
period of time can be toxic to the body. If you are pregnant or have
liver disease, do not take over 10,000 IU per day. Excessive intake
during pregnancy has been linked to birth defects.
Vitamin B6
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Vitamin B6 is a lipotropic agent. It helps to decongest
the liver by promoting the flow of fat and bile to and from the liver.
Vitamin C
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Vitamin C is a strong antioxidant. Antioxidant vitamins are helpful in
protecting the liver from damage as well as helping in detoxification
mechanisms. White blood cells (neutrophils) utilize vitamin C to help
produce cytotoxic enzymes which they use to eliminate foreign matter.
Studies show that Vitamin C increases glutathione levels, another important
nutrient needed for detoxification. Vitamin C is anti-bacterial and anti-viral.
Vitamin E
(*Sal-FreeTM)
Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant essential to combat cell damage caused
by free radicals. Antioxidant vitamins are helpful in protecting the liver
from damage as well as helping in detoxification mechanisms.
