Slimming Fashion Tips For Dresses and Skirts
Balance
As in all outfits, you want to balance your body.  This means, examine your figure and use clothing styles to balance top and bottom.  For example, if you are small on top and have larger hips, don't wear a dress that is fitted on the top and full on the bottom as this only serves to accentuate the difference between top and bottom.  If large on top and small on the bottom, don't choose a full top and narrow or tight bottom.  Look at your silhouette and try to achieve a balanced overall look.

One basic balancing technique is to wear a long top (jacket, sweater etc.) over a short or narrow skirt or dress and a shorter top over a long or fuller skirt or dress.  This serves to divide the body into 3rds rather than halves and tends to be more flattering.   

Hem Length
 If you have great legs, show them.  Hem length should accent good points and minimize any problems. Regardless of the current trend, find the length that flatters you and stay as close to it as possible.  Hem lines should not fall at the fullest part of the leg because the hem line will draw attention to wherever it falls. If you have large thighs, don't wear a mini-skirt that ends at the largest point on the thigh.  If you have great legs, wear a side slit to show them off.  If your hem is going to fall around the knees, be careful to have the hem fall at the slimmest part of the knee rather than the widest point.  Hems that are longer than mid-calf can make a short person look matronly, so be very careful when choosing your hem length and experiment with the lengths and the shoes that you plan to wear in order to determine the most flattering look.

Vertical Lines
As mentioned on some of our tip pages, the idea is to draw an overall vertical line with your outfit because vertical lines (up and down) elongate and slim and horizontal lines generally do not.   With this in mind, your skirts should always be longer than they are wide.  Straight skirts look better a little shorter and wider, fuller skirts look better a little longer.
